Dive Site Description of Maaya Thila

Maaya thila is situated in the north Ari atoll, just west of the island of Maayafushi. The size of this thila is around 30 meters high and 80 meters wide, with the tip of it rising to just 6 meters below sea level. Maaya thila is popular place for divers, particularly known for its White Tip Reef Sharks.

Boats can be moored to the thila at a permanent site, particularly if the currents are strong. If the currents are weak divers should be able to swim around the entire thila with relative ease.

The base of Maaya thila is exposed somewhat to the currents of the ocean and therefore inhabits some real diverse life forms. There are deep caves and overhangs, soft corals and gorgonians. One cave in particular, which is on the north face harbours an abundance of fish. Besides White Tip Reef Sharks, grey reef sharks are also a common sight around Maaya thila. Anglerfish, Zebra Moray, Giant Moray, Barracudas, Soliderfish and Hawkfish are usually spotted here too.
