Dive Site Description of Vaagali Faru

The dive site at Vaagali Faru is situated on the south-wester corner of the South Male Atoll on the outside of the reef. Nearby islands include Vaagali also known as “chicken island” and Rannalhi. The actual diving spot is around the base of Vaagali island, with the slope starting at a depth of 3 meters then dropping steeply to 30 meters where the reefs outer edges are met.

Drift dives are only made at Vaagali Faru. A dive east of Vaagali island can be made in the canal when the current is running outward from the atoll. Conversely, if the current is running inwards, the dive can begin from the outer reef. Once the descent is made it will be visible that the sea bed will be quite flat and sprinkled with large coral blocks. There will also be some small grottoes along the edge.

Sea life in and around Vaagali Faru is quite good. Large soldierfish living in grottoes, numerous white tip reef sharks, Manta rays and the occasional sea turtle can be spotted.
